RHA INTRODUCES STRESS MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME FOR COMPUTER USERS
|
|
Stress is a part of normal life and probably can't be completely
eliminated. The body reacts to physical or emotional stress
by increasing production of hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine,
which increase heart rate, blood pressure, and metabolism, to
help the body react quickly to the stressful situation. Stress
becomes a problem when it interferes with normal activities.
Working with computers can sometimes be stressful. Computer
users subject their bodies to many unnatural stresses, which,
over time, can lead to postural difficulties, eyestrain, headaches,
and repetitive-motion injuries. Those who do a massive amount
of typing at work are most at risk. The computer keyboard forces
the hands into unnatural positions which strain the musculature
of hand / arm and shoulder. Clicking a mouse hundreds of times
per day can also lay a foundation for future problems. Another
concern for computer users, is their vision. Staring at a computer
monitor for hours can strain the eyes. Emotional or physical
stress causes depletion of vitamins B and C, and several minerals,
potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, and protein. This depletion
causes the body to react even more strongly to stress. Prolonged
stress, anxiety, and tension affects the nervous system, and
can cause many further complications if left uncorrected.
|
| |
|
| |
Typical
symptoms of stress are:
|
|
| |
Irritability,
Short temper, Anxiety, Head and neck aches.
|
|
| |
Common
computer related syndromes: |
|
 |
Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome: Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that occurs when the median nerve
is squeezed as it crosses the wrist to enter the hand.. It has
been recognized that repetitive movement at the wrist, as occurs
with prolonged use of a computer keyboard can lead to inflammation
in the carpal tunnel and the resultant painful syndrome. Patients
usually feel pain in the forearm area as well as numbness in the
affected hand .
|
|
 |
Eye
Strain:
Long hours staring at a computer screen will inevitably lead to
asthenopia or eyestrain. Persons tend not to blink as frequently,
which also leads to drying of the eyes. Over a prolonged period,
this can lead to some deterioration in vision especially in those
prone to visual problems.
|
|
 |
Repetitive
Strain Injury :
This can be a serious and very painful condition that is far easier
to prevent than to cure and can occur even in young individuals.
Use of pointing devices like mice and trackballs are a cause. The
thousands of repeated keystrokes and long periods of dragging
with mice slowly accumulates damage to the body .This can happen
even more quickly as a result of typing technique and body positions
that place unnecessary stress on the tendons and nerves in the
hand, wrist, arms, and even the shoulders and neck.

|
 |
What
are the Symptoms? |
|
| |
Tightness,
discomfort, stiffness, soreness or burning in the hands, wrists,
fingers, forearms, or elbows
|
|
| |
Tingling,
coldness, or numbness in the hands Clumsiness or loss of strength
and coordination in the hands Pain that wakes you up at night
Feeling a need to massage your hands, wrists, and arms
|
|
| |
Many
other conditions like Lower back ache, digestive disorders, headache,
tendonitis, bursitis, trigger finger etc are also seen in computer
users.
|
|
| |
Today's
fast paced lifestyle is putting a toll on us. Unless we learn
to manage stress, we will get sick. But there are steps we can
take to manage stress.
The response to stressful situations can be greatly improved by
simple, natural changes to your food and lifestyle, without resorting
to drugs or unnatural diets. And dealing with computer stress
is really no different than dealing with any other type of stress
.
